Many shows now have a section for a decorated egg, this is super if you are a bit crafty yourself, or you would like to get your children in to the fancy. There is so many ideas out there for a decorated egg, at the federation 2010, the judges where very suprised at a helicopter
made from a large duck egg, which was made for the charity help for heroes. There is also the most popular ones like the nativity, which are all very easy to do, if you would like any inspiration just go to your local show, or have a look on the internet searching ”decorated eggs”. you will be amazed what you can do with a egg and some paint!

Getting birds ready for a show
Posted by Dan in Dan's Blog on January 2, 2011
When getting your birds ready for a show you need to take alot of things in to count, you have got to make your bird stand out from the rest. There is hundreds of classes at some shows, i have just got my entry form for peebles show and it has 300 classes all ranging from decorated eggs to ladies classes there is everything! You need to do the birds legs making sure that they are the correct colour and also their feet and nails, cleaning out all of the dirt. You also need to check if your bird is the right weight, you must not be able to feel the keel bone and nothing else, you have to feel the keel bone with lots of meat around it. Then you need to look at the birds feathers, to check if they are all looking in the right place and most of all if they look right! Now you look at the birds tail, it must not have any lumps missing out of it. Then you look at the birds head, checking if it has the right eye colour, if the waddles are the right size and also the comb. After you have done this you give the bird a bath in warm(ish) water (you can get special shampoo from the internet, do not use your normal shampoo) try to keep the birds head above the water, as they can get panicky. Then you can let them dry off by them selves, put them in frount of a fire or use a hair dryer. When the bird is dry spray mite spray under the wings and by the back end. If you have breed with a Rosecomb, get the spray and put it on a cloth then gently rub it into the comb, as they are prone to getting mite in the comb. On arival to the show you can put olive oil or vaseline on the combs and legs to make them stand out.
Pekin Bantams
Posted by Dan in Dan's Blog on December 26, 2010
Hi, If you have pekin bantams either for showing or just as pets, my guess is that you love them! I keep 2 colours of pekins, Blacks and Gold Partridge, they are brilliant egg layers (through winter) and also brilliant sitters! When ever I take these to a show, I always come home with something, because they are such beautiful birds! They have a super breed club http://www.pekinbantamclub.co.uk/, which produces a lovely quarterly newsletter. The club has standardised 12 colours, Black, Blue, Buff, Cuckoo, Mottled, Barred, Columbian, Lavender, Partridge, White, Birchen and Silver partridge. These small birds have absolutely no relation to the Cochin, as they are a True Bantam (which means as no large counterpart).
Thank you Daniel
