Pocket Farmer

Born and raised in northern California, I spent my formative years growing up in the country; horses, cows, pigs, chickens-all the trappings of a farm, but none of the responsibility. We didn’t have to make the farm “work” for us, we had plenty to eat and I don’t remember even having a garden. When I was old enough to leave, I did, and have missed it ever since.

pocket-farmer-photoFast forward 25 years, I have worked my way east and have settled just south of the Chicagoland area. I have now decided that the future looks brightest when viewed from the back porch. I love the idea of growing our own food and raising animals that will help feed the family. It isn’t what our society is used to, but it’s what we must do to keep our planet fit and healthy for our future generations to enjoy.

So there is a giant learning curve ahead and the ride might get a little rocky, but this is the path we are taking. I’m ready, if you are! A little research, lots of hard work and some sunshine should take us far on this journey. And hey, if we have a little fun along the way…we earned it!

I am finding it very helpful to bounce ideas off of folks who have already invented this wheel and so I started a community page on Facebook called The Pocket Farmer. We have been discussing chickens, gardening, small scale farming and all things sustainable.

There is always room for more at that table. Feel free to join us!

Thank you and happy farming!
